R.I.P Our Boy Stalin.
Number stations are the object of desire for any Cold War era intelligence service obsessed basement dweller who has used KiwiSDR.
Many theories about these strange radio stations have circled around as a result of the sp00ky recordings of these number stations repeating bizarre musical motifs and electric bloops, only to be interrupted now and then by random strings of indecipherable numbers and hexadecimal codes. Many of these theories include the numbers being the code names of Operatives because of some commie shit that happened in Cuba like 20 years ago.
In reality, the likely explanation for most of these things is that they are a disinformation tactic designed to throw a fake lead on some sensitive info, as anyone in charge of sending a message as sensitive as what the CIA or KGB might be sending wouldn't be fucking stupid enough to use a shortwave radio, which has been the hobby of pimple faced nerds and conspiracy theorists for years now.
SOME(two since i cant be fucked to write about more) NOTABLE NUMBER STATIONS
The Lincolnshire Poacher link
A number station which originated from the RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus (Of course the fact that it's point of origin was traced to a military installation in a foreign country helped kick the hype over these stations into overdrive). The station would signal the beginning of the beginning of a broadcast by using the first few bars of the song "The Lincolnshire Poacher". This would be followed by a handful of random numbers, likely just thought up by the bored pen pusher in charge of running the thing a moment or two before the scheduled broadcast times.
UVB-76
UVB-76, also known as "The Buzzer" is a Russian number station which has been running for fucking ever.
It broadcasts a low buzzing noise 24 hours a day and has never been acknowledged by the Russian Armed Forces. (ZOMG RUSSIA USA COLLUSION WHEN???!!!!!!!!!)
Much like The Lincolnshire Poacher, aside from buzzing, all it does is send names and numbers.
Tune into frequency 4625 on KiwiSDR is you wanna feel sp00ky for 10 seconds and then realize you're just listening to static-y beeping.
